April Newsletter

ClayHouston had a good representation at NCECA, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, in Portland last week.  We enjoyed excellent lectures, demonstrations, and, of course, ceramic work displayed all over Portland… not to mention networking opportunities and fun.  I hope even more CH members will be able to attend the 2018 conference in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, though, a taste of this bounty will come to Houston in the form of our 1 day workshop that is being planned for spring and the 2 day/2 artist symposium this fall.  More information will be forthcoming.  Take in some of the exhibits at local galleries and museums that are listed in the newsletter.  There’s lots of good stuff going on.  The Board is continuing its strategic planning effort, and committees are working to provide the CH benefits we all appreciate. If you’d like to be more involved, please contact me at

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

Cup-Throwing Demonstration
by Ehren Tool

April 22
10:00am - 5:00pm
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
4848 Main St. Houston TX 77002

Please join HCCC for a cup-throwing demonstration by United by Hand artist Ehren Tool, a former marine who served in the 1991 Gulf War. Tool uses his potter’s wheel to make cups that expose the large disparity between fiction and the realities of war. For the artist, each cup represents a human life. He uses the utilitarian object’s familiar form to engage the user in a dialogue with the graphic photographs and press-molded war paraphernalia used to decorate each cup’s surface.

Tool will be throwing cups on the wheel that will be incorporated into the exhibition. Many of these cups will be given out to the public at the United by Hand Memorial Day Weekend Closing Event on Saturday, May 27. Clay generously provided by the Ceramics Store, Inc.

Artist can donate their skills by demonstrating their clay artistry at various Whole Foods Stores.
