NOVEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER


Dear ClayHouston members,

Last month, we had a wonderful opening reception for our Member’s Exhibition, Equation of State. Congrats to our winners!

Equation of State is now on view at Rec Room Arts (100 Jackson Street).  You can also view the exhibition online here.  Rec Room is a performing arts space that produces powerful productions by emerging and established artists across disciplines. Visiting hours for our member’s exhibition are Wednesday-Saturday 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Afterward, take in the latest performance at Rec Room, "Put Your House In Order," which runs from 7:30 to 9:30 pm through November 12. You can purchase tickets here.

All are invited to our General Membership Meeting on Saturday, November 5 from 10 AM to 12 PM in the Favrot Auditorium at the Glassell School of Art. Please join us to learn more about ClayHouston's activities this past year, as well as hear from our outstanding board members. We'll then head over to Mo' Better Brews, just down the road, for lunch and mingling. I hope you can make it!

Lastly, be sure to mark your calendar for our annual Bayou City Clay Crawl on December 4, from 10AM-5PM. This year, we have eight host studios across Houston, 38 artists and live demos that will take place the day of the event. For more info, visit our website here.

NEW SALAD DAYS ARTIST GETS TO WORK

Texas native Ali Saunders (past treasurer for ClayHouston) will be  Watershed's 2023 Salad Days Artist, the LSU ceramics grad is spending six months on campus making 500+ plates for next July's Salad Days fundraiser on July 8, 2023. 


Emily Rensink At Wayne Art Center

Emily Rensink’s sculpture “Letting Go 101” was invited to show at Wayne Art Center’s Craft Forms 2022. The show will be on view from December 3, 2022 - January 21, 2023. (www.wayneart.org



Anne Steacy,  Vivian Pastor & Damon Thomas at Glassell School of Art

Anne's work from her current project, "My Father's Tools," and Vivian's "Can you hear me" and Damon's "The Pack" are included in Glassell's  "MINIATURE TO MONUMENTALexhibit in the Butcher Gallery, October 21 - February 5. This exhibit explores the scale of works done in clay, jewelry, metalsmithing, and enamel media. The artists in the exhibition are all former or current students at Glassell. 

   


Tiffany Angel Nesbit at North San Jacinto College

Tiffany Angel Nesbit announces the opening of her exhibition, “Bluegrass Nest,” at North Gallery in the Fine Art Center (building N.1) of North San Jacinto College, 5800 Uvalde Road, Houston Tx. 77049 on Thursday, October 20, 6-8 p.m. Exhibition runs October 20-November 17 Artist talk is on Wed, November 2nd at 1 pm

Thomas Perry at Lancaster Museum of Art

Thomas Perry and Carolyn Dahl's collaboration "Petal Meditation" Platter has been selected for the Strictly Functional Pottery National Exhibition at the Lancaster Museum of Art, Lancaster, PA, September 17 to November 5.


Emily Rensink at University of Southern Mississippi

Emily Rensink’s piece “Manipulated by the Media” was invited to show in the Southern Miss Ceramics National, 2022 at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Museum of Art. The show runs from October 10 – November 6, 2022 with an Opening Reception on October 10th at 7:30pm which includes a lecture presentation  beginning at 6pm by juror, George Rodriguez.

POTCLUB | Alternative Firing with Damon Thomas - Barrel Pitfire

Oct 29th, Nov 5th & 6th 2022 | Day 1 - 9am-1pm, Day 2 & 3 - 9-11am

Participants are asked to bring 1-2 pieces of bone-dry clay work to class. Please make sure no dimension of any piece exceeds 12”. Greenware will be available for purchase for participants unable to bring their own work.

Day 1 - Overview & Preparation: Damon will cover the history of pit-firing with examples and slides, followed by a demonstration of how to make to make an easy terra sigillata slip that provides a wonderful canvas for atmospheric smoke effects. Participants will then apply terra sigillata to work and we will end with Q&A. Work will be bisque fired in preparation for the next meeting.

Day 2 - Barrel Pitfire: Demonstration of preparing work for firing, adding chemicals & combustibles for the best smoke effects, then lighting & covering of Pitfire. 

Day 3 - Cleaning & Repair: Unloading, cleaning of pots and demo of finishing techniques. Discussion of repair of broken pieces.

This workshop is intended for all skill levels. All materials for surface and firing will be provided.

POTCLUB |Coloring Clay with Kathleen Hamlet - Nerikomi 

Nov 12 & 13th 2022 | 12-4pm each day 

POTCLUB will have the pleasure to welcome Houston based potter Kathleen Hamlet, to share this uncommon ceramic technique using coloured clay known in Japan as ‘Nerikomi’. Through careful handling and blending of tinted porcelain Kathleen produces delicate patterns in slabs of clay and transforms them into exquisite functional vessels.

In this hands-on workshop you will be shown how to add shades of colour to the clay then to combine the different coloured clays to create a variety of patterns. Participants will also learn preparation of the material so that the patterns are well compressed and integrated into a slab that you will then use to make vessels.

This workshop is intended for all skill levels. All materials will be provided. For kilnless potters your creations can be fired for you and collected at a later date, after the workshop.

POTCLUB | Handbuilding Happy Hour

Every Friday 6-8pm, bring a friend and your favorite tipple ( BYOB ) - all skill levels welcome! There will be some supervision, participants are welcome to make a suggested project or one of their own choosing.

Aprons, tools, stoneware clay, underglazes and firing is included.

Kathleen Hamlet Open for Classes

Kathleen Hamlet is pleased to announce that she is opening her studio to private clay and clay related lessons on a variety of topics. Topics include handbuilding, slip casting, mold making, and basic studio practices, including the use of power tools.
Kathleen has been a clay person since 1988 and her specialty is Nerikomi (colored Porcelain laminated together to form patterns). 
If there is more interest, a bigger studio space is also an option.

Third Coast Clay and Friends Art Show

Saturday, Nov. 12 from 11am-6pm on the outside grounds at 8519 N Main St, 77022.  The perfect opportunity to find original artwork for friends, family, and maybe even yourself.  Artists in ceramics, painting, glass, jewelry, and more will be showing and selling their handmade creations. Come support local artists and small businesses.

Raku Firing Workshops at Third Coast Clay

Limit 8 students per session. Saturday, Nov. 19 Session 1 from 10am - 2pm  /  Session 2 from 3pm - 7pm

Please bring two bisque pots (clay with grog is best) approximately 11" tall x 6"wide or smaller. No plates, platters, or flat slabs. If you don't have a pot, we will have some for sale $20 a pot. OPENING WINTER 2022: HTX Clay is a membership-based studio offering open studios during all business hours, learning opportunities for all experience levels, workshops, private and group experiences, and more. Local clay artists Abbie Preston Edmonson and Jessica Gutierrez wanted to create a modern, beautiful, and inspiring ceramic studio where Houstonians can learn about clay and find community.

Job Openings

Monart School of Art Pearland is looking for a ceramics teacher who would enjoy working with kids, ages 5-16. Candidate would work Monday - Friday. This post offers 35-40 hours a week.

They should have a Bachelors' in ceramics. Should have skills in hand building as well as wheel throwing. Should have knowledge of glazes.

Four Circle Studio Seeking Wheel Throwing Instructor 

Four Circle Studio is in search of a wheel throwing instructor to teach private lessons for 1-2 students at a time in a small, sun-filled, intimate studio setting. 

We are looking for someone who has experience teaching wheel throwing to beginners, loves meeting new people, and is available to teach classes 3-4 days a week, including evenings and  at least one day on weekends. Instructors will also have access to use the studio space when no classes are in session.
