Bust out the pumpkin spice because we’ve got some exciting Fall events coming up! (Disregard the previous statement if you’re not a fan of pumpkin spice. Our Member Exhibition is currently on view and I’m pleased to share with you that Maria-Elisa Heg, recent curatorial fellow and current digital content manager at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, will be selecting the awards for our exhibition! I hope you’ll join us on Saturday, November 6th, from 6pm - 8pm for our exhibition reception at Sabine Street’s North Gallery, 1907 Sabine Street, Houston, TX 77007. We will be announcing the award winners and you’ll have a chance to view the exhibition as well as enjoy refreshments. It’s really a fantastic display of work, I hope you can make it! Remember COVID-safe precautions, please wear your masks inside the gallery. Register After that, mark your calendars for our General Membership Meeting on Tuesday Nov 9th from 6-7pm on Zoom. Join us to hear more about what ClayHouston is up to in addition to board reports and year-in-review summaries. We’ll be getting together virtually on Zoom, Thursday, November 18th from 6pm - 7pm. We will announce our November raffle winner at the event and, in keeping with the raffle theme of functional wares, we will be embracing the idea of “Gathering”. A discussion of functional ceramics and our favorite things about getting together and sharing good times, good food and good pottery! RegisterMoving on to December, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the 4th annual Bayou City Clay Crawl on Sunday, December 5th from 10am - 5pm! This year’s studio tour will feature 7 studio locations and over 40 ClayHouston member artists and their beautiful ceramic work. Damon Thomas in Sculpture Month
“Contact,” a clay-focused multimedia installation by Damon Thomas, is on view through Dec. 4 as part of Sculpture Month Houston at SITE Gallery at The Silos at Sawyer Yards, 1502 Sawyer St., Suite 400. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 12-6. Damon will give an artist talk on Sat., Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
“Contact” is one of 16 installations on view for Sculpture Month Houston. The gallery’s cavelike setting is ideal for this year’s theme, “Altamira: The Primal Urge to Create.” Damon’s installation is his imagining of how humans and wolves first encountered each other in the dark confines of a prehistoric cave.

Pit Firing for Ceramics Workshop Damon Thomas will be teaching a pit firing for ceramics workshop at the Center for Centering at Mystic Lyon, 5005 Lyons Avenue, Houston, TX 77020. To cover the entire spectrum of the pit firing process, from making terra sigillata slip to seeing the finished product, the workshop will meet on several afternoons including Saturday, November 6 (1-4 pm) , Saturday, November 13 (1-3 pm) and Sunday, November 14 (1-3 pm). This easy, primitive firing method is a great technique to have in your clay toolbox whether your work is figurative or abstract, handbuilt or wheel-thrown. Participants are asked to bring 1-2 bone-dry, unfired clay pieces, with no dimension larger than approximately 12”. Workshop fee: $160. Space is limited.
