Presenting: Cecilia Dykes
Cecilia Dykes has been working in clay consistently for the last four years, with three of those years at Glassell School of Art. She primarily creates figurative sculpture and very often uses other media in the final piece. She sketches out concepts with varying details, but as the work progresses, the clay may encourage the form to take on a life of its own. The final result is always a compromise.
She experiments with different clays for texture and color and will explore alternate finishes such as paint or encaustic wax. However, her focus is always on form, in particular fragments of the human figure, which inevitably results in a personal comment.
She approaches her work with a “tongue in cheek” attitude, pulling on the wealth of images in everyday life. Intrigued by society’s or a culture’s perception of what is right and wrong, or “politically correct,” she is especially touched by the expectations of the female’s role from birth to death, in relationships or not. The works attempt to juxtapose the difference of opinions, not to shock or shout, but to contrast in ways to amuse at first and then allow contemplation later.
